Claydonhill Covert

The footpath into Claydonhill Covert opens onto proper woodland - ancient oaks and beeches that would've been here long before Banbury became the market town it is today. This isn't a manicured forest or a visitor attraction with interpretation boards and a cafe. It's real working woodland that happens to be accessible, and that's rather the point.

Walking through feels immediate. The canopy closes overhead within minutes of leaving the field edge, and the path winds through dense undergrowth that changes character with the seasons. Spring brings bluebells thick enough to photograph. Autumn turns it into a carpet of bronze. Winter reveals the wood's structure - something lost when everything's in leaf.

It's a walkers' spot, straightforwardly. Families with young children will manage short loops, but this isn't playground material. Birdwatchers come here. So do locals out for a proper stomp. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a reasonable circuit, though you could spend longer if you're in no rush.

The covert sits close enough to Banbury that it works well as a break between the town and time at one of the nearby campsites. Fir Tree Campsite and Newton Grove are both within striking distance and highly rated - you could do worse than basing yourself at either and using Claydonhill for an afternoon walk when the weather holds. It's not dramatic or famous. That's precisely why it's worth knowing about.
