Claydon House

The first thing you notice at Claydon House is the sheer asymmetry of it all. One side looks properly stately, all stone and symmetry, while the other half is basically a shell - the family ran out of money mid-build in the 1770s and never finished it. Walking round the grounds near Buckingham, you get that slightly unsettling feeling of architectural ambition meeting hard reality.

Inside, the plasterwork is genuinely extraordinary. The Chinese Room, the Gothic Room - these aren't just decorative flourishes, they're proper showcases of 18th-century excess and craftsmanship. You'll spend longer staring at the ceilings than you expect. The house tells the story of the Verney family across four centuries, and the collection of furniture, paintings and personal correspondence actually makes you care about these people rather than just moving through on autopilot.

History buffs will find plenty to chew on. Families with older kids - say ten plus - will get something out of it, though younger ones might struggle with the quiet, contemplative pace. Allow a good two hours minimum, longer if you're into the domestic detail of historical houses.

It's free entry to the grounds, though house admission costs a few quid. Summer weekends can get busy. If you're camping at nearby Embers Camping, Claydon makes an easy morning visit before the afternoon heats up. Worth the detour if you're doing the Buckinghamshire heritage circuit, but don't expect Chatsworth theatrics.
