Clatto Hill

The walk up Clatto Hill takes you out of St Andrews and into proper Fife countryside within minutes. It's not a dramatic peak - more a substantial bump in the landscape that rewards the climb with views across the town and towards the coast. The ascent is straightforward enough, maybe thirty minutes at an easy pace, and the path is well-trodden.

What makes it worthwhile is the perspective shift. From the top you can see St Andrews spreading out below, the golf courses laid out like a map, and on clear days the Firth of Tay stretches away to the north. It's the kind of viewpoint that makes you understand the geography of the place rather than just wander through it.

Families with walkers aged eight upwards will find it manageable. Younger kids might find the walk a bit of a slog without much excitement at the end - there's no café, no playground, just views and open air. That said, it's an excellent warm-up if you're based at Clayton Caravan Park or Craigtoun Meadows and want to blow off energy before tackling the bigger walks elsewhere in Fife.

Go on a morning when the light's decent and the wind isn't thrashing about. The hill's free, accessible year-round, and far less crowded than St Andrews town centre itself. Allow two hours including the summit time. It works well as part of a bigger day out - combine it with a wander round the old town rather than making it your main event.
