Clangate Wood

The woodland around Clangate, just outside Canterbury, offers proper forest walking without any fuss or visitor infrastructure. It's the sort of place you'll stumble upon by accident - ancient oak and beech creating a decent canopy, with footpaths that wind through without too much fanfare. The main appeal here is straightforward: if you want to escape the cathedral crowds of Canterbury and actually walk through trees for an hour or two, this delivers. There's nothing touristy about it, which is either exactly what you want or a reason to head elsewhere.

For families with young kids, it works fine for a stretch of the legs, though there's no playground or cafe to break things up. Walkers will appreciate the quiet - it's the sort of place where you hear birds rather than other people. The forest floor can get boggy in winter, so pick your season. Given it's only a couple of miles from Nethergong Camping and under five miles from Seaview Holiday Park, it makes sense as a morning or afternoon excursion if you're staying in the area.

Being Kent woodland, don't expect dramatic vistas or anything Instagram-worthy. What you get is space, trees, and silence - which sounds dull until you've spent an hour there and realise you've actually switched off. Free to access, naturally. Allow an hour minimum if you're taking it seriously; thirty minutes if you just need a quick constitutional after breakfast.
