Clach Sgoilte

Two massive slabs of stone stand in a field near Pitlochry, split down the middle as if cleaved by a giant's axe. Clach Sgoilte - the name means 'split stone' in Gaelic - is genuinely puzzling. Nobody knows exactly when it was split or why, though local folklore has all sorts of theories involving witches, giants, and acts of divine intervention.

The site itself is straightforward: you walk out to see the stones, you examine them up close, and you're done in perhaps twenty minutes. There's no interpretation board, no visitor centre, no entrance fee - just the stones themselves standing in the landscape. For archaeology enthusiasts it's the mystery that hooks you. For casual walkers, it's a decent detour if you're in the area but hardly a reason to visit Perthshire on its own.

The real appeal here is how it slots into a broader exploration. Pitlochry itself has enough going on - the dam, the theatre, the shops - and you're well positioned for longer walks in the Highlands. If you're staying at Tighnavon Glamping Pods just up the road, it's genuinely walkable. Parkdean Resorts Tummel Valley is a bit further out but still reasonable for a morning ramble before heading elsewhere.

Best visited on a clear day when the light catches the stone properly. Go in spring or early autumn when you're less likely to be ankle-deep in mud. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming - there's no playground, no activity, just rocks. But if you've got teenagers interested in unexplained things or older walkers keen on lesser-known sites, it's worth the trip.
