Churchdown Hill

Standing at 286 metres, this modest Cotswold outlier punches well above its weight when it comes to views. From the summit, you'll get a proper panorama across the Severn Vale to the Welsh hills beyond - on a clear day, you can spot the Malverns and even the Black Mountains. The walk up from Chosen Hill Road takes about 20 minutes through beech woodland, emerging onto open grassland dotted with ancient earthworks. Nothing too strenuous, but just enough of a climb to make you feel you've earned those views.

History buffs will appreciate the Iron Age hill fort remains scattered across the summit, while families will find it an ideal afternoon adventure - short enough to keep restless kids happy, but rewarding enough for adults. The hill sits just southeast of Cheltenham, making it a cracking spot for stretching your legs if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Briarfields Touring Caravan Park or Court Farm Camping.

Best visited on weekday mornings when you'll likely have the place to yourself. Dog walkers are the main company you'll encounter. Allow a couple of hours including the walk and time to properly take in the views - though honestly, you could spend longer just watching the world go by from up there.
