Church Plantation

The woodland at Church Plantation spreads across East Yorkshire like a proper working forest rather than a manicured country estate. You're walking through mixed deciduous trees - oak, beech, ash - with the canopy thick enough to feel like you've properly escaped the flat surrounding farmland. It's the sort of place where you notice things: old forestry tracks, the occasional clearing, birdsong that actually drowns out the distant A-road hum.

This is walker territory first and foremost. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards. What you get is space and quiet, which after an hour in Bridlington's seafront chaos feels like currency. The terrain is gentle enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the length of the walks tedious - there's no loop designed to end quickly. In winter, when the trees are bare, you can see through to the surrounding fields and get a sense of how isolated this pocket of woodland really is.

If you're staying at Haven Thornwick Bay just down the road, Church Plantation makes a solid wet-weather backup or a morning's proper ramble before heading to the coast. Free to wander, and best visited on a weekday when you won't be dodging school groups. Allow at least ninety minutes if you want to feel like you've actually been somewhere. The trees do their job well - it's honest woodland with no pretence, which is exactly what some people are after.
