Church of St. Candida & Holy Cross

A short walk from Bridport takes you to one of Dorset's most striking medieval churches, tucked away in the village of Whitchurch Canonicorum. The Church of St. Candida & Holy Cross dates back to the 12th century and still houses the shrine of St. Candida herself - a proper rarity in England, as most saint reliquaries were destroyed during the Reformation. You'll find her remains in a stone shrine on the north side of the nave, which gives the whole place an almost palpable sense of pilgrimage history.

The building itself rewards close inspection. Norman doorways, a fine tower, and genuinely good medieval stonework throughout. The interior is calm rather than grand, which somehow makes the spiritual weight of it all feel more genuine. History buffs will spend a good hour here; casual visitors can manage twenty minutes and still feel they've got the measure of it.

From any of the holiday parks within two miles (Coppet Hill, The Dorset Hideaway, Newlands) it's an easy walk, or a short drive from Seadown or Golden Cap if you're based further afield.
