Church Covert

A proper woodland walk tucked between Longney and the wider Gloucestershire countryside, Church Covert is the sort of forest you stumble upon rather than plan for. Dense trees, quiet paths, and barely another soul about - it's the real thing, not a manicured country estate affair.

Walkers will appreciate the woodland trails cutting through here. They're not signposted to death, so there's an element of exploration about it. The canopy is thick enough that even on drizzly days you stay reasonably dry, and in summer it's genuinely cool underfoot. Allow an hour for a proper mooch about, longer if you're the type who stops to look at things.

Historically minded visitors might poke around for traces of older land use - these Gloucestershire woodlands often have layered histories - though Church Covert itself won't hit you over the head with interpretation boards. Families with young kids will find it decent for letting them run about, though it's not a playground situation.

The nearest camping options are Apple Orchard Camping & Caravan Site just 2.4 miles away, or Baldwin's Brook Glamping & Caravanning slightly further, both solid bases for exploring this pocket of the Forest of Dean fringe. It works as a morning walk between breakfast and heading somewhere else, or a wind-down after a longer day out. Don't expect facilities - there's no car park infrastructure or visitor centre. You're visiting a wood, basically, and that's exactly the appeal.
