Christ Church Belper PCC

The red brick Victorian church that dominates Belper's skyline catches you first - all soaring arches and industrial-age confidence. Christ Church was built to serve the mill workers pouring into town during the cotton boom, and you can feel that purpose the moment you step inside. The interior is genuinely striking: ornate plasterwork, stained glass that actually rewards close inspection, and a sense of genuine community that hasn't faded despite the mills closing decades ago.

Historians will find plenty to chew on here - the architecture tells you everything about mid-19th century industry and faith colliding in the Midlands. It's free to wander in during opening hours (call ahead to check), and you'll need maybe 30 to 45 minutes to look properly around. The churchyard itself is peaceful, dotted with graves that span generations of local families.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Poplars Farm is lovely for families, while Carsington Fields and the Carsington Water campsite work well for a longer stay - this is a worthwhile half-hour detour before heading down to explore Belper itself. Don't expect a massive production, but if you're interested in how ordinary Victorians worshipped and what their priorities were, it's genuinely worth stopping for. The town's industrial heritage makes far more sense once you've stood in this building.
