About Chopping's Wood
It's the sort of place where you can spend a couple of hours genuinely losing yourself, which sounds dramatic but it's true. The trails aren't particularly taxing - nothing that would trouble young legs or walking boots - but they're unmanicured enough to feel like proper woodland rather than a municipal park. You'll see bluebells if you time it right in spring, and the undergrowth changes character through the seasons.
This woodland works best for walkers and anyone after a peaceful hour or two away from the main roads. Families with older kids will enjoy the sense of exploration. If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - The Courts is genuinely excellent, as is Stocks Farm just up the road - Chopping's Wood makes a natural half-day outing. It's free, as far as I could determine, and there's no entrance gate to speak of. Just turn up and crack on.
Don't expect facilities or a café. Don't expect crowds either. What you get is honest woodland on Essex's eastern edge, and if that appeals to you, it's well worth the trip from Braintree.
