Chickerell Downs

The chalk grassland at Chickerell Downs pulls you straight into proper Dorset countryside - open, windswept, and full of low-growing plants that somehow thrive on thin soil. It's a nature reserve that rewards slow walkers rather than fast hikers. You're looking at wildflowers in summer (horseshoe vetch, bird's-foot trefoil, salad burnet), orchids if you time it right, and if you're lucky, chalkhill blue butterflies doing their delicate dance across the turf.

This is one for naturalists and patient walkers, not the "knock it off the list" brigade. An hour is plenty unless you're serious about identifying every species. The terrain is gently rolling rather than dramatic - the views stretch out towards Chesil Beach and the coast, but this isn't a viewpoint attraction; it's about what's underfoot and in the air. Bird enthusiasts do well here too. There are no facilities to speak of, so bring water and decent footwear.

If you're based at Chesil Beach Lodge Park or one of the touring sites near Chickerell itself, this slot nicely into a morning before heading to the coast proper. It's free access and genuinely wild in feel despite being minutes from holiday parks. Summer is best - spring works too if the weather holds. Winter is damp and the views flatten out. Not everyone's cup of tea, but if you actually care about what grows in British grassland rather than just snapping a background photo, it's worth the detour.
