The Roman Gardens sit on the edge of Chester, where archaeologists have uncovered fragments of the fort that once anchored this corner of the empire. It's not Hadrian's Wall - don't expect dramatic stone structures - but rather a working nature reserve where history happens to be underfoot. You'll find yourself walking through woodland and open grassland, spotting the odd interpretive board explaining what stood where nearly two thousand years ago. The Dee Valley views are decent enough, though they're really a bonus to the historical interest.

History enthusiasts will get the most from a visit, particularly those with a bit of archaeological knowledge. Kids under ten might struggle with the abstract nature of the site - there's not much to visually grab them beyond the usual nature reserve appeal. Allow an hour, perhaps ninety minutes if you're reading everything.
