The wetland at Cheetham Park near Greenfield is the kind of place where you actually see wildlife rather than just hope you might. Reed beds stretch across the water, and on a decent day you'll spot waterfowl properly - coots, grebes, the lot. It's not a manicured country estate; it feels genuinely wild and ungoverned.

Walkers get the most from this. There are proper paths through the reserve, and depending on the season, you might clock different species throughout the year. Spring's best for breeding birds, though winter brings migrating flocks. You won't need half a day here - ninety minutes is realistic, two hours if you're serious with binoculars.

It's free, which helps. Bring decent shoes because the ground gets boggy, particularly after rain. The paths can be muddy but they're manageable. Kids enjoy spotting birds if they're old enough to hold still and actually look, but under-eights might find it a bit slow.
