Cheddar Waterfall

The waterfall itself is modest - nothing that'll leave you gasping like Niagara - but it's a proper pleasant spot to find in the Cheddar Gorge. You get there by walking up through the gorge itself, which is the real draw: steep limestone cliffs towering either side, narrow paths, and enough geological drama to keep anyone interested for a couple of hours.

It's free to access and takes about 20-30 minutes to reach from the main car park depending on your fitness level and how often you stop to admire the rock formations. The waterfall drops into a small pool at the base, and on a warm day it's tempting to paddle about - though the water's properly cold even in summer.

Walkers will get the most out of this. It's not a destination in itself; it's a reason to explore the gorge properly rather than just driving through. Families with younger kids might find the walk a bit much, and anyone after an easy stroll won't appreciate the uneven ground and occasional steep bits.

If you're camping at any of the nearby sites - Cheddar Bridge, Owley Woods, or Cheddar Caravan and Motorhome Club are all within walking distance - it's an obvious half-day outing. Combine it with the cheese factory in town if the weather turns. Go early morning before crowds arrive and the light's better for photographs. The gorge can feel quite touristy by midday.
