Charton Plantation

Walk into Charton Plantation and you're immediately surrounded by towering conifers and ancient woodland that feels properly removed from the Devon coast just a few miles away. This forest sits inland from Bridport, offering miles of quiet trails through dense trees - the kind of place where you actually hear birdsong instead of seagulls.

It's a walker's spot, no question. The woodland paths are well-maintained but can get muddy, especially after rain, so proper boots matter. You could easily spend two to three hours here without rushing, though an hour's wander is equally satisfying if you're pressed for time. Kids will either love the adventure of it or get bored quickly - depends entirely on whether they're the type to be entertained by nature or demanding ice cream within fifteen minutes.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared with water and snacks. It's free to access, which is always welcome. The plantation has that dense, slightly dark quality that some find atmospheric and others find a bit claustrophobic - it's not open moorland, so don't expect panoramic views.

Perfectly workable as a break from a seaside holiday at Seadown or Newlands Holiday Parks nearby. If you're staying at either and want to swap the beach for woodland without driving far, Charton fills that gap. Just manage expectations - it's a legitimate walk through working forest, not a scenic ramble.
