Chapel Wood

A quiet woodland walk near Dorking that doesn't announce itself loudly - no visitor centre, no café, just trees and trails. Chapel Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for, which suits it fine. The forest floor is soft underfoot, roots and moss the main hazards, and the canopy does that proper job of shutting out the noise from the A25 beyond.

It's walker territory mainly. Not particularly long - you can do the full loop in an hour without pushing - but it's pleasant enough if you're breaking up a Dorking afternoon or combining it with other Surrey spots. The woodland itself is fairly typical Sussex Weald stuff: beech, oak, the occasional clearing where light floods through. No dramatic vistas or rare orchids to hunt down, so don't come expecting theatre.

If you're staying at Henfold Lakes, Chapel Wood makes a decent morning walk before heading back for lunch. It fills time without exhausting anyone. Families with younger kids might find an hour's enough before energy dips, though there's nothing here to actively entertain them - no play areas, no stream to dam. The real appeal is just being off the main road in proper woodland.

Free to enter, open whenever. Best in autumn when the beech turns, less muddy in summer. Winter can be grim underfoot. Don't expect a destination - think of it as a functional woodland walk that does exactly what it says.
