Ceunant Llennyrch National Nature Reserve

The gorge cuts through the landscape like something carved by giants - steep wooded sides, a river tumbling below, and barely a soul around even in summer. Ceunant Llennyrch is a proper bit of Welsh wilderness, a national nature reserve that feels genuinely remote despite being walkable from Talsarnau. You're there for the walk itself, really. The terrain is challenging - muddy paths, rocky sections, the kind of thing that demands proper boots and doesn't forgive sloppy footwork. It's glorious if you like a bit of scrambling through woodland with the sound of water below, less appealing if you're after an easy stroll.

The reserve protects old oak woodland and the river gorge, so you'll see ancient trees, mossy banks, and if you're lucky, some decent birdlife. Bring binoculars. This isn't a visitor centre job with interpretation boards - it's just the land itself. Allow two to three hours for a proper explore; there's no rushing through a place like this. It's free access, as far as anyone can tell, though the lack of obvious infrastructure suggests it's deliberately kept under the radar.

It suits walkers and nature types far more than families wanting quick entertainment. Taldarnau's your base for supplies, but the real advantage is staying at one of the nearby parks - Barcdy Caravan & Camping (2.5 miles away) or Tyddyn Llwyn (5.7 miles) are both excellent - giving you easy access to this and the broader Snowdonia hiking network without the drive-in-drive-out madness.
