Cegin Viaduct

The Cegin Viaduct near Bangor is one of those railway heritage sites that rewards curiosity more than it demands it. Built in the 1840s as part of the Chester to Holyhead line, this substantial stone structure carries trains across the Afon Cegin valley - and yes, you can actually stand beneath it and feel properly dwarfed by Victorian engineering.

It's a museum in the loosest sense: more a place to understand how the Industrial Revolution physically carved itself into Anglesey's landscape. The viaduct itself is the main draw - nine arches of dressed stone that still look formidable after 180 years. If you're travelling with kids who've tired of beach time, twenty minutes here breaks up the journey nicely without demanding much planning.

Walkers will find it sits on decent rambling country between Bangor and the interior of Anglesey, making it a natural pause on a longer loop. History enthusiasts get genuine value from seeing how seriously Victorian engineers took their work - this wasn't built to fail.

Admission details are sparse, but the structure itself is accessible and visible from nearby footpaths. Allow an hour if you're combining it with a proper walk; half that if you're just stopping for photos and a stretch.
