Cefn Cyff

The walk up Cefn Cyff rewards you with proper views across the Brecon Beacons - the kind of vantage point that makes the climb worthwhile without being a full day's undertaking. It's a modest peak by Welsh standards, but that's rather the point. You're not battling crowds or scree fields here; you're getting legitimate mountain air and panorama in about an hour or so from the car.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a slog, depending on fitness levels, but teenagers who can manage a steady gradient will have the satisfaction of summiting something real. The approach is straightforward enough - no scrambling, no technical bits - just solid footwork and decent lungs.

Based near Brecon, you're ideally placed for a day that combines this with other Beacons walking. The proximity to Cefn Cantref Campsite (2 miles away) and Pencelli Castle Caravan & Camping Park (3 miles) means you could comfortably make this part of a longer stay without faff. Pop up here in the morning when light's sharp, then potter about Brecon town itself for lunch.

Conditions matter. In heavy rain it gets boggy and the views disappear entirely - go on a clearer day if you can. Free to access, no facilities on the hill itself, so bring water and something to eat. Well worth the effort if you're already in the area and fancy a proper Welsh mountain without the tourist infrastructure of the higher peaks.
