Causey Pike

The climb up Causey Pike from Keswick is steep, relentless, and absolutely worth the huffing and puffing. You're looking at a proper fell walk rather than a gentle ramble - around 900 metres of ascent over a few miles - but the payoff is a summit that feels genuinely exposed and dramatic, with views across the Lake District that justify every burning calf muscle.

The path itself is well-trodden and straightforward enough, though it gets rocky and scree-strewn near the top. On a clear day you'll see Skiddaw, Blencathra, and across to the Helvellyn range. The peak itself is small and craggy - not much flat ground for picnicking, but that's partly what makes it feel like a real achievement. Expect the round trip to take three to four hours depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top.

This is for walkers who actually want a walk, not amateurs after an easy stroll. Families with older kids (10+) who enjoy hills will manage it fine. The weather matters - cloud cover up here ruins it completely, so choose a decent forecast. It's free, obviously, being a fell.

If you're camped at Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club or Castlerigg Hall - both within a few miles - Causey Pike works brilliantly as a half-day outing. It's close enough that you won't waste the morning driving, but challenging enough that you'll feel you've actually done something by lunchtime. Skip it if you're looking for an easy morning amble.
