Castlemorton Common

An expanse of open common land that rolls across the Worcestershire countryside, Castlemorton Common is the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick tick-box visit. You get 600 acres of grassland, heathland and scattered woodland - the kind of landscape that feels properly wild without requiring serious hiking boots. The common sits right on the edge of Malvern, so it's genuinely accessible but still manages to feel remote.

Walkers absolutely get the best from this place. There are tracks crisscrossing the land, some well-trodden, others less so, and you can easily lose an afternoon exploring without hitting a dead end. Families with children will find it manageable - it's open enough that kids won't feel claustrophobic, and there's enough space for them to run around without you panicking about traffic. History enthusiasts might be less thrilled; this isn't a site dripping with dramatic ruins or archaeological drama, though the common itself has been grazed on for centuries.

The real appeal is the solitude and the views across to the Malvern Hills themselves. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the drive. Free to access, no time limits, no faffing about with entry fees. You'll want at least two hours if you're doing anything beyond a token stroll. If you're based at The Turbles or Swallowfields Retreat just down the road, you could slip over here easily enough between park activities. Go early on a weekday morning and you might have the whole lot to yourself.
