Castle

The view from up here stops you dead. Castle sits high enough that on a clear day you can see right across the Surrey Hills, rolling green folds stretching out towards the Weald. It's one of those spots where the landscape just opens up and reminds you why people bother walking uphill.

What you get is straightforward - a proper vantage point, the kind of place where the composition practically frames itself. Walkers come here as part of longer loops through the area, which makes sense. It's not a massive detour if you're already exploring the ridgeline, but I wouldn't say it's worth a special trip on its own unless views are your thing. History buffs might be disappointed - there's not much left to examine at ground level, so come for the panorama, not the ruins.

The nearest towns give you options for supplies and accommodation. Chantry Wood Campsite sits just 1.5 miles away, making it a logical base if you're planning to tackle some of the walking routes in the area. Wyldecrest Surrey Hills and Chapel Farm Park are within a few miles too, all close enough for a morning hike up here before breakfast or an evening visit for sunset. Allow an hour or so, including the walk up. Free to access, obviously - it's a viewpoint, not an attraction with a café. Go when the weather's playing ball. Mist rolls in quick up here, and if the clouds drop, you're just standing in a field looking at nothing.
