Castle Park

The Conwy estuary is where Castle Park does its best work - a sprawling nature reserve that curves around the river where it meets the sea, just outside the medieval town. You're walking through proper Welsh coastal habitat here: marshland, reed beds, and mudflats that shift with the tides. In spring and autumn the place fills with migrating birds, and if you time it right with high tide you'll see waders and wildfowl working the shallows.

It's a walker's reserve rather than a sit-down spot, though there are benches if you need them. The paths are well-maintained and manageable - not demanding, just gentle ambling through different zones of the estuary. Birdwatchers will spend hours here with binoculars. Families with younger kids might find it works best as a quick morning walk (allow 45 minutes to an hour) rather than an all-day thing, unless they're genuinely keen on wildlife.

Castle Park connects well with a caravan-based holiday in the area. Wern Farm and Cefn Cae are both close enough for a morning visit, and you're only a short drive from Conwy itself - the castle and the town walls are actually more compelling if you want to pack proper sightseeing into a day. The reserve is best in winter for serious birdwatchers, when the visiting populations peak. It's free to walk, which helps balance it against paid attractions nearby. Don't expect drama or theatrical views - this is quiet, observational stuff. But for anyone who likes reading a landscape and spotting what lives in it, it's time well spent.
