Castle Park

Castle Park sits just outside Frodsham and delivers what you'd expect from a proper Cheshire nature reserve - woodland walks, open grassland, and genuinely decent views across the Weaver Valley. The ruins of Frodsham Castle anchor the site, though calling them dramatic would be overselling it. What you get instead is a useful leg-stretcher with some historical backbone rather than a full-on heritage experience.

The walking here is straightforward and family-friendly. Trails wind through mixed woodland and emerge onto open slopes where the view actually justifies the effort - on a clear day you can see across to Wales. Allow an hour to two hours depending on which paths you take. The castle remnants themselves are more atmospheric than substantial, but they're enough to give kids a focal point and adults a reason to pause.

Historically minded visitors will find it worth a visit, and families with younger children won't struggle with the terrain. Walkers looking for something more challenging might find it a bit tame. It's free to access, which counts in its favour when you're planning a caravan holiday in the area.

If you've got a bigger appetite for exploring, Delamere Forest - only five miles away - offers considerably more extensive walking and the lake as backup entertainment. Castle Park works as a warm-up rather than a destination in itself.
