About Castle Howard Arboretum
This is proper territory for anyone who actually cares about trees and gardens. Families with young children might find it a bit much after an hour or so - there's limited playground infrastructure and it's genuinely vast - but older kids who'll sit and sketch or hunt for bird nests will be in their element. Walkers should allow a solid two to three hours; the paths are well-maintained but they meander, and if you're the type to stop and read the specimen labels, you'll lose track of time entirely.
The whole estate sits about four miles from York, which makes it a natural fit with a caravan holiday at York Meadows or Fox Hill, both excellent bases if you're planning a few days exploring. Castle Howard itself requires separate admission, but the arboretum alone is worth the trip - especially spring through early autumn when the planting shows what it can do. Winter visits are quieter and more contemplative, though considerably bleaker. Bring proper shoes; the ground stays damp.
