Castle Clough Wood

The woodland path drops steeply into Castle Clough Wood the moment you leave Nelson behind, and within minutes you've forgotten the town exists. This is proper Lancashire moorland forest - a mix of broadleaf and conifer that follows the clough down into a genuine ravine, complete with a beck running through the bottom.

It's a walker's wood rather than a casual stroll spot. The terrain is uneven and rooty, especially after rain, so decent boots are essential. Budget around an hour and a half for a decent circuit, longer if you're stopping to pick your way across the stepping stones or just sitting on a fallen log listening to the water. The steep sides mean it stays damp and cool even in summer, which is either wonderful or miserable depending on the weather.

Families with older kids will find it engaging - there's a genuine sense of exploration here, and the beck keeps younger ones amused. Bring wellies for anyone under ten. It's free to walk and no official restrictions that I could find, though the footpaths can disappear depending on maintenance.

The location works well alongside Rossendale Holiday Cottages & Glamping, just down the road. You could easily string together a morning here with a picnic at the top, then spend the afternoon properly tired. It's not showy - no viewpoint, no facilities, no Instagram moment. Just good woodland that feels genuinely wild for Lancashire.
