Castell Deganwy

Two rocky outcrops rise above the Conwy estuary like ancient sentinels, crowned with the crumbling remains of a 13th-century fortress that never quite lived up to its ambitions. Castell Deganwy sits on twin peaks just outside Conwy, offering some of the finest views across North Wales for those willing to tackle the steep climb.

The castle itself is more ruin than restoration - think tumbled walls and grassy mounds rather than intact towers. But that's rather the point. This is proper rambling territory where you can scramble about the rocky summits and imagine medieval Welsh princes plotting their next move against Edward I's forces.

Families with older children will love the adventure of exploring both peaks, though the paths can be rough and the drops quite serious in places. History enthusiasts get a bonus - this site predates Conwy Castle by centuries, with evidence of Iron Age settlements and Roman occupation.

Allow a good two hours for the full experience, including time to catch your breath and take in those views across the estuary to Anglesey. The climb is free, naturally, and best tackled on clear days when you can see right across to Snowdonia.
