Cast Wood

Cast Wood is a proper forest walk just outside Tayport, the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. Once you're in among the trees, the noise of the nearby coast fades away completely - you get that sudden shift from suburban to actually woodland. The paths are well-maintained, threading through mixed broadleaf and conifer, and there's enough variation that an hour feels generous rather than rushed.

It's ideal for families wanting a proper walk without the drama of an exposed hillside. Kids can burn energy, and the woodland floor is forgiving enough that it won't destroy smaller legs. Dog walkers absolutely love it here. History buffs won't find much to chew on, but if you're after a decent leg-stretch during a holiday based at Clayton Caravan Park or Craigtoun Meadows, it's well worth the short drive.

The light filtering through in autumn is genuinely lovely, and winter walking here is quieter than you'd expect. Come midweek if you can. Weekends bring the local crowd, which is fine, but the forest feels more open when it's just you and a few dog walkers. Free to access, no facilities that I saw, so bring what you need. Allow two hours comfortably if you're meandering, or forty-five minutes if you know what you're doing.
