Carregwestad Point

The cliffs at Carregwestad Point rise dramatically from the Irish Sea, marking the spot where French forces landed during the last invasion of Britain in 1797. It's a proper historical moment frozen into the landscape - not some polished visitor centre, just the raw Pembrokeshire coast where 1,400 soldiers scrambled ashore and were repelled within days by local militia and a bit of Welsh determination.

Walking out here from Fishguard, you get the full story written into the terrain. The coastal path sweeps past rocky outcrops and grass that's been battered by Atlantic winds, and you can trace the actual invasion route if you know what you're looking at. The views back towards the cliffs are excellent, especially on a clear day when you can see across to Dinas Island.

Walkers should allow a couple of hours for the round trip from Fishguard, though the paths are decent and the effort repays itself with scenery.
