Carn Nant-yr-ast

The walk up Carn Nant-yr-ast takes you through proper moorland, climbing steadily from the valley floor near Tregaron until you hit the summit at 605 metres. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch - no dramatic crags or sudden drops - but the views across the Cambrian Mountains justify the effort. On a clear day you can see for miles, rolling ridges folding into the distance like crumpled linen.

The whole thing takes about two hours return if you're moderately fit, longer if you stop to catch your breath and take photos. The terrain is mostly grass and heather, occasionally boggy underfoot if it's been wet. Wear proper boots. There's something genuinely restorative about having the moorland mostly to yourself - you might see a handful of other walkers, but it's not crowded.

Family groups with older kids will manage it fine. Younger children might struggle with the sustained climb and the exposure on windier days. The real appeal here is for walkers who want to tick off a peak without the scrambling or technical difficulty - and for anyone keen on upland landscape photography. The light changes constantly across those distant hills.

It's free, obviously. Start early if you can, particularly in winter when daylight's limited. If you're camping at Cambrian Mountains Glamping and Camping just five or so miles away near Tregaron, this makes a cracking half-day excursion before heading back for a fire and a proper meal.
