Carn Meadhonach

The walk up Carn Meadhonach rewards you with proper Highland views the moment you crest the ridge. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch - more of a rounded hill that rises above the moorland east of Inverness - but that's rather the point. You get the sense of actual achievement without needing rock climbing gear or a mountain guide.

The route itself takes you through working moorland, and depending on the season you might spot red grouse or golden eagles if you're lucky. Allow a solid three to four hours for the full round trip from the car park, including time to stand about and take in the panorama. On a clear day you can see right across to the Moray Firth. On a dreich day (and there are plenty of those) it's all mist and the particular smell of wet heather.

This is walker territory rather than casual visitors. You'll need proper boots - the ground gets boggy - and the weather can turn on you quickly. It's exactly the sort of walk that makes sense if you're basing yourself at Tomatin Glamping Pods nearby, breaking up a longer holiday in the area rather than driving out specially from town.

The approach is straightforward from Inverness without being touristy. No visitor centre, no cafe, no crowds. Just you, the hill, and a genuine bit of the Highlands that hasn't been processed for visitors. That's the appeal, really.
