Carmyllie Hill

The walk up Carmyllie Hill takes about forty minutes if you're not in a tearing hurry, and the reward is a proper viewpoint across Angus and into the Highlands beyond. It's not one of those mountains that demands technical gear or leaves you gasping - just a steady climb through farmland and moorland that builds nicely without ever feeling brutal.

The summit itself sits at 380 metres and on a clear day you get sweeping views north toward the Cairngorms and south across the Strathmore valley. Forfar sits visible below, which helps orientate you. On the day I went, clouds were doing their usual Scottish thing of rolling in halfway up, but even then the hillside had that raw beauty that makes you understand why people walk these hills in the rain without complaint.

Walkers will find this genuinely worthwhile - it's accessible enough for keen family groups but doesn't feel trivial once you're up there. The path itself is clear enough, though muddy patches are inevitable. Allow an hour and a half return if you're taking it easy. Autumn is cracking here, when the light sits lower and the heather colours up.

If you're based at Greenhillock Glamping just three miles away, this makes an excellent morning outing before a lazy afternoon back at the site. It fills a couple of hours nicely without dominating your day, and beats yet another drive to a busier attraction.
