Carlton Park

Carlton Park sits just outside Saxmundham in Suffolk, a proper working nature reserve rather than manicured parkland. You get woodland walks, wetland areas, and if you time it right, decent birdwatching - the Mere itself draws wildfowl year-round. It's the kind of place where you'll actually see something living rather than just walking past flower beds.

The appeal here is straightforward. Walkers get a decent network of paths without needing boots and a map. Birdwatchers will spend hours with binoculars. Families with younger kids might manage an hour or so before the novelty wears thin - it's not a playground, and there's no café to break things up. The reserve works best if you're genuinely interested in what's actually happening ecologically rather than just wanting a pleasant stroll.

Access appears to be free, which helps, though I'd confirm opening hours before heading out as these reserves sometimes have seasonal restrictions. Spring and early summer are the obvious times - more birds active, fewer muddy patches underfoot. Winter can be bleak and waterlogged.

It won't dominate your holiday, but it slots in nicely alongside beach visits to the coast and exploring Saxmundham's market town character.
