Carcombe Wood

The woodland around Carcombe, just outside Battle in East Sussex, is proper walking territory. It's the sort of place where you can lose an hour without noticing - dense trees, the occasional clearing, and enough quiet to actually hear yourself think. There's no grand entrance or visitor centre, which means you're essentially wandering through someone's back garden if you're not careful, so best to stick to established paths.

This works brilliantly if you're the type who likes to stretch your legs between coffee stops rather than hunt for a headline attraction. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes unless they're proper nature kids spotting birds and beetles. Walkers will appreciate it as a decent loop on the way to or from Battle itself - the medieval town is close enough for a half-day visit. The woodland's also handy if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Beech Estate or Seven Acre Woods and need to burn off some energy before breakfast.

Timing wise, autumn's when it looks best - the light filters through the turning leaves rather nicely. Spring's good too if you're after bluebells. Summer can feel a bit thick and claustrophobic in there. Rain doesn't ruin it, though muddy boots are guaranteed. There's no admission charge that I could find, which makes it a free option if you're already camping nearby. Allow a couple of hours for a proper wander depending on your pace and how much time you spend staring at moss.
