Cannon Avenue

A ribbon of mature woodland running through the Hampshire-Berkshire borderlands near Newbury, Cannon Avenue is the sort of place locals know and visitors often miss. It's essentially a tree-lined bridleway that stretches for a decent walk - proper old-school English forest without the theme park trappings.

What you get is shade, birdsong, and the occasional deer if you're quiet enough. The canopy here is genuinely thick, which means it's brilliant on scorching summer days when everywhere else feels like a furnace. The ground is uneven in places - roots and the odd muddy patch - so it's not a stroll for the very young, but walkers and cyclists will find it satisfying. There's something quite meditative about it, if you like that sort of thing.

This works best as part of a longer ramble rather than a destination in itself. You can link it to other local paths and make a proper morning or afternoon of it. If you're based at Hollington Park Glamping just down the road, it's an easy detour that breaks up a holiday nicely without demanding much planning.

Access appears unrestricted - it's a public bridleway - so timing isn't critical, though early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter. Allow an hour minimum if you're just walking the main stretch, longer if you're exploring the side routes. Don't expect facilities or dramatic viewpoints. This is genuine woodland, not a visitor attraction dressed up as one.
