Camphill Column

Standing on a rise near Morpeth, this sandstone column cuts a stark figure against the Northumberland sky. Built in 1813 to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo, it's the sort of monument that stops you mid-walk and makes you squint up wondering what on earth it's actually for.

You can't go inside it - there's nothing to do except walk around it, read the inscriptions if you can make them out, and take a photo. The real draw is the location itself. The views across the surrounding countryside are genuinely decent, and it's the sort of place where you'll likely have the place to yourself unless it's a weekend in summer.

For history buffs it's worth a detour, particularly if you're already exploring the wider Morpeth area. Families with young children might find ten minutes enough unless they're into spotting old monuments. Walkers will get the most from it - there's decent farmland rambling nearby, and it breaks up a longer route nicely.

There's no visitor facility, no café, and no clear opening hours or admission fees to worry about, which means you can just rock up when suits you. The column sits on private land but appears accessible from a footpath. If you're staying at any of the nearby parks - Woodland Chase Glamping is closest at just over six miles - it's an easy half-hour drive plus a brief walk. Worth the detour? Only if you're already in the area.
