Pele Tower

A squat stone tower standing alone in Northumberland countryside, Pele Tower is one of those medieval structures that stops you mid-walk and makes you actually think about what life was like 600 years ago. It's a fortified farmhouse, essentially - built in the 14th century when cross-border raids from Scotland were a genuine threat, not a history lesson. The tower is compact, rough-hewn, and utterly unfussy. You're not walking into some grand castle with manicured lawns; this is the real thing, weathered and substantial.

What strikes you most is the sheer practicality of it. Ground floor was for animals and supplies, upper floors for the family and their valuables. Windows are tiny slits because, well, arrows. It's the kind of place that makes defensive architecture suddenly make sense.

The site is free to access and requires minimal time - 20 minutes if you're quick, perhaps 45 if you're genuinely interested in medieval life and want to read the information board properly. There's no visitor centre or facilities, which is honest at least. Best visited on a clear day when you can actually see across the landscape and understand why someone chose this particular spot.

It works well as part of a wider walking route rather than a destination in itself. Morpeth is the nearest town, and the surrounding area is proper Northumbrian countryside - rolling and green. Pair it with time at Percy Wood Holiday Park or Coast and Castles Camping if you're staying in the region, both close enough for a morning walk.
