Camboglanna (Castlesteads)

The Roman fort at Castlesteads sits on a quiet stretch of the Cumbrian landscape near Armathwaite, overlooking the River Irthing - and honestly, it's the sort of place that rewards curiosity more than it dishes out obvious thrills. This was Camboglanna, a proper frontier installation built in the 120s AD to guard Hadrian's Wall, and the remains tell a story if you know where to look.

What you'll actually see is largely earthworks and a grassed-over fort layout - there's no interpretation centre, no gift shop, no crowd. The ditch and rampart lines are still visible if you walk the site, and the position itself matters: standing here, you feel the strategic logic of Roman Britain. From the northern edge you can see towards the Wall itself. For archaeology enthusiasts or anyone interested in how Rome held this borderland, it's worth an afternoon's exploration. Families with young children might find it less gripping - there's nothing interactive here, and the story requires some imagination to bring to life.

The site is free and always accessible. Allow an hour if you're serious about walking the whole fort, less if you're just passing through. Spring or early autumn are best - the ground can be boggy in winter. If you're camping at Green Acres Caravan Park just down the road, it's easily combined with a walk along the Wall itself at Walltown or a visit to the nearby Lanchester Loughs. Not spectactular, but genuinely interesting if you're the sort of person who gets excited by Roman field archaeology.
