Callow Hollow

Callow Hollow sits in the shadow of the Long Mynd, that sprawling ridge that dominates the landscape around Church Stretton. It's a limestone sinkhole - the kind of geological quirk that makes you stop mid-walk and actually look at the ground beneath your feet rather than the view ahead.

What you're really coming for is the walk itself. The hollow dips into the hillside with steep sides and a wooded floor, and it's the sort of place that feels properly wild even though you're only minutes from the town. On a quiet day it's yours alone. The limestone gives it character - pale rock faces catching the light, roots gripping into thin soil. Don't expect anything dramatic; this isn't a ravine or a canyon. It's modest, intimate, the kind of landscape detail that rewards a closer look.

Walkers will get the most from it. It works as a quick detour during a Long Mynd circuit or as a gentle half-hour explore if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Small Batch or Mountain Edge are practically on the doorstep. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own; you'd do better combining it with a proper walk elsewhere on the ridge.

There's no visitor infrastructure here. No cafe, no facilities, no charge. Just park near Church Stretton and go. Best visited after rain when the water's actually flowing; in dry conditions it's less compelling. Spring brings wildflowers; autumn gives you colour on the wooded slopes. Summer can feel busy with walkers tackling the Mynd.
