Caldey Old Priory

You'll need to take a boat to reach this one - Caldey Island sits offshore from Tenby, and that's rather the point. The Old Priory is what remains of a monastic settlement that goes back centuries, now managed by the Cistercian monks who still live on the island. It's a proper step back in time, with crumbling stone walls and a sense of genuine quietness that feels increasingly rare.

What you get is essentially a walk around the ruins and a glimpse into how monks actually lived here - not a full reconstruction with gift shop and interpretive panels, just the bones of the place. The church itself is small and austere. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the whole island visit, though the priory itself won't keep you much longer than thirty minutes unless you're into medieval stonework and monastery layout.

Families find it interesting enough, though younger children might tire quickly without much to touch or interact with. History types will appreciate the authenticity - no Hollywood version here. Walkers should know the island paths are manageable, and the views back toward Tenby are worth the boat fare alone.

If you're based at one of the parks near Tenby - Haven Kiln Park, Saltern, or Becks Bay Camping are all within 2.8 miles - it makes a good afternoon excursion when the beach weather turns.
