Caldey Island Lighthouse

You'll need to take a boat from Tenby to reach Caldey Island, and that's half the appeal - the crossing itself gives you proper views of the Pembrokeshire coast. The lighthouse stands on the eastern tip of the island, a red and white striped structure that's been guiding ships since 1906. It's not the tallest or grandest lighthouse you'll ever see, but there's something rather satisfying about climbing to the top and getting 360-degree views across the Bristol Channel.

The island itself is owned by Cistercian monks, so access is limited and a bit regulated. You can't just wander around freely - there are designated routes and quiet hours to respect the monastic community. The lighthouse visit combines well with exploring the rest of Caldey: the abbey, the old priory, and the tiny beach. Most people spend two to three hours on the island before catching the return boat.

It's best suited to walkers and anyone keen on maritime history rather than families with young children, mainly because the boat trip can be choppy and there's not masses to do once you're there for little ones. Ferries run roughly April through September, weather permitting - which in Wales means checking conditions before you go.

If you're camping at Haven Kiln Park or Becks Bay, both within a couple of miles of Tenby's harbour, the lighthouse makes a cracking half-day trip. Pair it with a fish and chips on the seafront and you've got a proper Welsh coastal afternoon sorted.
