Caldey Head

The walk out to Caldey Head demands proper legs and a decent pair of boots. You're heading for the southern tip of Caldey Island, that dramatic rocky outcrop you can see from Tenby's beaches - and yes, it's as windswept and exhilarating as it looks from a distance.

Getting there means taking the passenger ferry from Tenby harbour across to Caldey Island itself (there's a small fee, and sailings depend on tides and weather). Once you're over, it's a straightforward coastal path walk heading south towards the headland - maybe forty minutes from the ferry landing. The path hugs clifftops with proper drop-offs on one side and moorland on the other. When you reach Caldey Head, you're standing on genuine sandstone cliffs with the Celtic Sea churning below and hardly another soul in sight.

This isn't a sit-and-relax destination. It's for walkers and photographers who get a kick out of exposure and drama. The views stretch back towards Tenby and across to Carmarthen Bay on clear days. Kids can manage it if they're confident on uneven ground and understand the danger of edges.

Stay at one of the nearby parks - Becks Bay, Haven Kiln Park, or Saltern are all within three miles of Tenby harbour - and build this into a longer coastal walking day. The island has a monastery and a shop for tea, so you won't starve. Allow three to four hours total once you factor in ferry times and the walk itself. Go when wind speeds are reasonable. This one rewards effort.
