Caer Llugwy Roman Fort

The remains of a Roman fort sit quietly on the hillside above Betws-y-Coed, easy to miss unless you know what you're looking for. Caer Llugwy isn't one of those showy archaeological sites with reconstructed gatehouses and visitor centres - it's genuine, weathered, and all the better for it. You'll find earthwork defences, the faint outline of the fort's interior buildings, and if you're paying attention, the ghost of a settlement that housed Roman soldiers nearly two thousand years ago.

Walkers and history types will get the most from this one. The fort sits at a decent height with decent views across the Conwy valley, so the hike up justifies itself whether or not you're fussed about the archaeology. Families with older kids who can manage a steep path and don't need constant entertainment will be fine, but younger children might find it a bit abstract - there's nothing to touch, nothing interactive, just the land itself telling the story if you listen to it.

It's free to visit and there's no barrier, no official opening hours. You can turn up whenever suits you. Allow an hour if you're exploring properly, less if you're just popping up for the view. Based near Betws-y-Coed, it slots nicely into a walking holiday - combine it with the Snowdonia Glamping Holidays or Maenan Abbey Caravan Park nearby, and you've got proper hill country on your doorstep. The fort works best as part of a larger day out rather than a destination in itself, but that's rather the point.
