Gwydir Uchaf Chapel

Getting to Gwydir Uchaf Chapel means leaving the main road near Betws-y-Coed and driving up into proper Welsh mountain country. The chapel itself is tiny - I mean genuinely small, the kind of place that stops you mid-stride because you can't quite believe what you're looking at. Built in the 1670s, it's one of Wales' most remote places of worship, and the setting alone justifies the trip: moorland, stone walls, and views that stretch for miles. There's a little graveyard around it, weathered headstones dating back centuries.

Inside, it's atmospheric rather than grand. The whitewashed walls, old wooden furniture, and general air of isolation do more work than any elaborate decoration ever could. This works brilliantly alongside Conwy Valley Touring Park or Maenan Abbey if you're basing yourself in the area. The walk up is moderate rather than strenuous, though the final stretch climbs. It's not really a family attraction unless your kids are into old buildings and views - the drive itself might test their patience more than the destination rewards it.
