Bywell Castle

The ruins of Bywell Castle sit on a quiet bend of the Tyne near Stocksfield, and they're frankly more atmospheric than impressive. You're looking at what remains of a 14th-century fortified manor - mainly stonework, a gatehouse, and enough of the walls to give you a proper sense of the medieval layout, but don't expect dramatic towers or keep work.

It's the setting that wins you over. The castle overlooks the river, and there's something genuinely lovely about wandering the grounds with the Tyne flowing past and barely another soul around. History types will appreciate the Norman church of St. Andrew's standing just nearby - they're practically neighbours across the grass.

Who'll enjoy it? This isn't a destination that holds your attention for hours. Give it thirty to forty minutes, tops. Families won't get restless if they're already keen on ruins, but younger kids might need prompting to see past the broken stonework. Walkers using the Tyne Valley route will find it a worthwhile detour.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted - the ruins are essentially open to the elements and the public. There's no visitor centre, no facilities, no interpretive boards to speak of. It's just you, the stones, and the Tyne.
