Whittle Dene

The woodland here is proper thick - tall conifers block out most of the sky and it stays cool even on warm days. Whittle Dene, near Stocksfield, is one of those forests that feels like it goes on forever, with a network of paths that range from straightforward strolls to more demanding walks deeper into the trees.

You're looking at a mix of woodland types. There are streams running through, which keeps things interesting, and enough variation in the terrain that you won't get bored if you're doing more than a quick loop. The canopy does a good job of sheltering walkers in light rain, though it gets muddy underfoot after wet weather - proper waterproofs and decent boots are worth bringing.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination for toddlers or anyone after dramatic views - the appeal is the walk itself, the quiet, the smell of the forest. You could easily spend two or three hours here without rushing. Families with older kids who enjoy exploring will do better than those with buggies.

If you're based at Valley View Camping & Glamping or East Farm Glamping nearby, this is a solid option for a morning or afternoon out. It's free to access and there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - just turn up and go. The lack of crowds is actually the main draw. Don't expect facilities or a cafe, though. Bring what you need.
