Currock Hill

Currock Hill isn't the sort of peak that'll have you racking your brain for a week afterwards, but it's a proper straightforward walk from Stocksfield and the views across County Durham are solid enough to justify the leg work. The summit itself sits at a decent height without being punishing - the kind of fell that rewards you without demanding serious mountaineering kit.

What you get is moorland walking at its most accessible. The paths are generally well-maintained, though it can get boggy after rain. Allow yourself a couple of hours from car to car if you're not dawdling, though plenty of people make an afternoon of it. There's something about the openness up here that makes you forget you're still within reach of civilisation.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this one. It's not a destination for those after dramatic scrambles or technical challenges, but if you want a decent hill walk without the three-hour slog, this delivers. The views back down to the valley are the real draw - on a clear day you can make out far more than you'd expect from the map.

Families with older kids manage it fine, though younger ones might find the exposed moorland a bit relentless. Stocksfield's close enough that you could base yourself at Valley View Camping or Hidden Retreat Glamping nearby and make this part of a broader walking holiday. It slots nicely into a day with other local walks rather than being a standalone destination, truth be told.
