Bylchau Terfyn

Getting up Bylchau Terfyn is a proper hill walk rather than a casual stroll, and it's all the better for it. The peak sits in that brilliant stretch of Snowdonia west of Caernarfon where the mountains feel less crowded than their more famous neighbours. From the summit you get views across to the Menai Strait and down towards the coast - on a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort.

This is walkers' territory. The approach isn't technical, but it demands respect - you're looking at a couple of hours up and back, depending on your fitness. The terrain is steep enough in places to make children grumble, though determined families with older kids will manage fine. Solo hikers and serious peak-baggers get the most from this one because the appeal is entirely the walk and the view at the top. There's no visitor centre, no refreshments, nothing but the hill.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Llyn Gwynant or Beddgelert are closest at just over two miles away - this makes a cracking half-day outing that won't eat your whole holiday. It's the sort of walk that feels properly Welsh: a bit windswept, occasionally muddy, and you'll likely have it mostly to yourself. Caernarfon is your nearest town for supplies before you head out. Go early to avoid whatever crowds exist, bring decent boots, and don't expect facilities on the mountain itself.
