Burwell Recreation Ground

The Recreation Ground at Burwell sits just east of Cambridge, a proper working nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction. You get wetland, grassland, and woodland all in one compact parcel - the kind of place where you might actually spot something instead of just walking past tidy flowerbeds.

It's honest work for birdwatchers and keen naturalists. The wetland draws waders and wildfowl depending on the season, and the woodland edges host the usual suspects if you know what to listen for. Families with young kids will manage fine on the main paths, though it's not a playground situation - children need to be the type who'll stay engaged by "let's see what birds are here today" rather than expecting swings.

Allow an hour or so for a decent wander. The paths are straightforward enough, though muddy patches turn up after rain. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - bring a flask if you want one.

Combine it with Chittering Park, a caravan site five miles away, and you've got a solid base for exploring the Cambridge area without getting lost in the city itself. The reserve feels particularly worthwhile in spring migration season when things actually move around. Go early morning if you're after birds. Late afternoon in summer works fine if you just want a quiet walk.
